Renewable Energy – Solar

Applying Smart Sensing RFID Technology where it matters the most –  Renewable Energy Solar

Creating Smarter reliable & durable smart sensing asset Tracking Solutions for the most challenging environments. By year 2050, Solar power generation plants could provide 11.3% Global Electricity.

Why Solar Smart Sensing Identification and Tracking is required?

All grid solar PV power plants must install necessary equipment to continuously measure solar radiation, ambient temperature, wind speed and other weather parameters and simultaneously measure the generation of DC power as well as AC power generated from the plant. They will be required to submit this data to the Ministry on line and/or through a report on regular basis for the entire duration of Power Purchase Agreement.

What are the benefits of Smart Sensing Solar Identification and Tracking?

  • Real-time audit and traceability
  • To retrieve the required readings of the Panel instantly as per Power boards guidelines.
  • To draw the I-V Curve instantly, using the readings stored in the tag
  • Improved manageability through a single unified Panel registration system across multiple sites
  • Reduced workload on Panel administrators, allowing redeployment to other critical projects
  • Elimination of error prone due to manual audit processes
  • Time intensive line of sight inspections are no longer required
  • Decreasing lost and stolen supplies
  • Reducing the time staff spends searching for inventory of Panel
  • Optimizing the utilization of current Panel inventory

What is the Information mentioned in the Smart Sensing RFID TAG used on each Solar Panel?

Each PV module used in any solar power project must use a RF identification tag. The following information must be mentioned in the RFID used on each module (This can be inside or outside the laminate, but must be able to withstand harsh environmental conditions.)

  • Name of the manufacturer of PV Module
  • Name of the Manufacturer of Solar cells
  • Month and year of the manufacture (separately for solar cells and module).
  • Country of origin (separately for solar cells and module)
  • I-V curve for the module
  • Wattage, Im, Vm and FF for the module
  • Unique Serial No and Model No of the module
  • Date and year of obtaining IEC PV module qualification certificate
  • Name of the test lab issuing IEC certificate
  • Other relevant information on traceability of solar cells and module as per ISO 9000

Functional details:

  • Each PV Module will be embedded with an RFID tag and the module details are
  • entered into a database along with the unique tracking number.
  • Each Tag embedded with the Module will carry details of PV Module and Cell
  • Required information in the tag can be written and attached to the panel. Using the
  • solar panel Identity application.
  • Required information in the tag attached to solar panel can be read Using the Solar
  • Panel application with help of an pre loaded Hand held RFID reader.
  • I-V Curve can is drawn by retrieving the data from tag embedded to the panel using
  • hand held RFID reader.

Smart Sensing Solar energy harvesting can be used with Smart Sensing RFID sensors to improve read range, introduce data loggers or use higher power consumption sensors.

Smart Sensing RFID sensors, next generation technology moving towards the autonomous sensing and the IoT. A source of ambient and item conditions data without the inconvenience of power supply. RFID battery-free sensors have limitations both in terms of communication range – which is around 2 meters – and smart sensor power consumption. From the user point of view, it limits the performance from the smart sensors – in accelerometers for example, only low data rates are manageable due to power consumption – and some sensors cannot even be used – i.e.: gas sensors requiring heat chambers.

Smart Sensing Solar Energy Harvesting

There are of course other approaches to autonomous sensing. Solar energy harvesting panels, vibration or thermal energy harvesting, are very well known. It all comes down to efficiency and availability of the sources. While RF energy harvesting – like in RFID tags – may not be the most efficient, its availability can be managed. Solar, vibration and thermal are very interesting but their availability is not completely predictable and your power source may be off when you need it.

The key may be in mixing these power sources up. Not having to choose a single energy harvesting technique but using multiple sources to provide higher value solutions.

Solar energy harvesting is a good fit on Smart Sensing RFID tags. A solar panel equipped RFID sensor tag has multiple advantages over a standard RFID sensor tag:

  1. More power available, increasing read range to the maximum for the smart sensing RFID tag. The limitation in the tag to reader link is not the power transfer but the communication link.
  2. Potentially able to power up higher power consumption sensors. Solar energy harvesting is taking place continuously. That energy is stored in a capacitor to be discharged when requested by the sensor. Designing the circuitry and size of the capacitor for different power requirements should be easy, provided the calculations on solar energy harvesting and consumption profiles are accurate.
  3. Smart Sensing potentially ables to perform battery-free data logging, depending on how much energy the solar panel can harvest but a data logger can be designed so data can be stored even if the RF power is not on – meaning no need to be close to the tags for data sourcing. Reader only needs to be close for the wireless data transfer.

These advantages come at a cost so you need to correctly assess your application needs and understand if adding extra power really adds value to your solution. There’s also room for other energy harvesting sources being added to Smart Sensing RFID battery-free sensor tags. Again, it all comes down to the specifics of your application and how to take advantage of your ERP systems to reap the benefits.

Renewable Energy – Wind

Applying Smart Sensing RFID Technology where it matters the most –  Renewable Energy Wind

Creating Smarter reliable & durable smart sensing asset Tracking Solutions for the most challenging environments.

Smart Sensing offshore or onshore wind farm with RFID, engineers need to take commonly used valuable equipment with them on site to fulfill repair or maintenance tasks. To manage the inventory and identify the location of the equipment it can be fitted with an smart RFID cable tie. The programmed information can be linked to a database that serves as an information and management tool for an easy way of tracking the readings, parts and tools.

The most common defects in turbine blades may be faulty microscopic and mesoscopic appeared in matrix, no detected by classical nondestructive testing (i.e. using phased array sensors), broken fibers can also appear and develop under moderated loads, or cracks and delamination’s due to low energy impacts.

To present the results obtained from testing of glass fiber reinforced plastic used in the construction of the wind turbine blades as well as the monitoring of the entire scalable blade using Smart Sensing wireless sensors placed on critical location on blade. Smart monitoring the strain and stress during the tests, the determination of the location and the nature of defects have been simulated using the finite element mothods.

RFID tracking for wind turbines

Onshore or offshore wind farm, engineers need to take commonly used valuable equipment with them on site to fulfill repair or maintenance tasks.  To smartly manage the inventory and identify the location of the equipment it can be fitted with an Smart Sensing RFID cable tie.

Smart Sensing technology (near-field communication) the engineer can communicate with the RFID tie by using an app on their smart devices or tablet PCs. To check out the instruments, equipment prior to the use and check it back in after finishing the job. The big benefit resulting from such a system is the permanent control, which have both users and administrators of these assets.

The principle behind wind turbines is very simple: the energy in the wind turns the blades around a rotor. The rotor is connected to the shaft, which spins a generator to create electricity. Wind turbines are mounted on a tower to capture the energy from the wind. The higher the blades are, the more they can take advantage of faster and less turbulent wind. A simple wind turbine consists of three main parts, the blades, shaft and generator:

Blades: The blade acts as barriers to the wind. When the wind forces the blade to move, some of the wind energy is transferred to the rotor.

Shaft: When the rotor spins, the shaft also spins, and transfers the mechanical energy into rotational energy.

Generator: A generator uses the difference in electrical charge to produce a change in voltage. Voltage is actually electrical pressure, the force that moves an electrical current. The voltage drives the electrical current (alternating current power) through power lines for distribution.
